Humans, as animals, have instincts which are not based in pure reason. Some of these instinctive behaviours have positive effects, some are destructive.

It is the ethical/moral responsibility of humans to use their reason to control their instinct-driven impulses, curbing the harmful ones and promoting the beneficial ones.
